In this article, you will learn:

WordPress on VEDOS Webhosting

The popular content management system (CMS) WordPress is popular among both amateur and professional website creators for its intuitive management and rich selection of freely available and commercial templates and extensions (plugins). VEDOS optimizes its range of web hosting plans with this content management system in mind so that a beginner's or professional's website runs quickly and without problems.

You can run WordPress on Webhosting with any plan and on the WMS service. WordPress is not compatible with the WebSite 1.0 service.

Installing WordPress on Webhosting

You can install WordPress on Webhosting manually, or using the application installer.

Manual installation

Manual installation is necessary for the LowCost web hosting variant, where we do not provide an installer. Follow these steps:

  1. On the WordPress website ⧉ (external link), download the desired version of the application.
  2. Name the extracted folder with the installation files after the domain name (without www, e.g. domena.tld) and upload it via FTP to the www/domains directory.
  3. According to the instructions Webhosting – Databases, create a new database for WordPress.
  4. Enter the domain in the address bar and complete the installation.

Automatic installation

Automatic installation is supported on Webhosting plans NoLimit and Extra, as well as WMS.

Detailed instructions for automatic WordPress installation can be found in the article Webhosting – Application Installer.

Common issues

Common problems with WordPress on Webhosting include:

Application installer error

Problem: An error occurs during installation using the installer on Webhosting or WMS.

Solution: Common installer issues are covered in the corresponding section of the guide Webhosting – Application Installer.

Administration is not available

Problem: I cannot log in to the WordPress administration.

Cause: The WordPress administration, including the one installed by our installer, is completely separate from the WEDOS customer administration. It may use a different login email and password.

It is also common for the administration link in the form /admin or /wp-admin to stop working.

Solution: If the administration link in the form domena.tld/admin does not work, try entering domena.tld/wp-login.php, where replace domena.tld with your domain.

WEDOS customer support does not have access to the WordPress administration. Restore a lost password using the “Forgot your password?” link on the login screen.

Error 503

Problem: On a website with WordPress, error 503 appears intermittently, most often at times when someone is working in the administration. After refreshing the page, the website works again for a while. When using WEDOS.protection, an error protection page is displayed instead of the classic page.

Cause: The hosting always has a certain number of simultaneously running PHP processes (the higher the plan, the more processes). A normal request releases the process immediately, but a background task can hold it for 20 to 30 seconds. When more of them accumulate, free processes run out and additional visitors do not receive a response. Most often this is WP-Cron (triggered when a page is visited) or the WooCommerce task queue (Action Scheduler). Updates, imports, thumbnail generation, or a backup plugin can also increase the load.

Solution: Reduce the load on processes:

  • Disable triggering WP-Cron when pages are visited. Add the code define('DISABLE_WP_CRON', true); to the wp-config.php file before the line /* That's all, stop editing! */, and set the regular execution of the wp-cron.php file once every 5 to 15 minutes according to the web hosting CRON guide. Without this second step, the website would stop running scheduled tasks altogether.
  • If you use WooCommerce, in the settings Status Scheduled actions, delete the records in the “Completed” and “Failed” tabs.
  • Perform system and plugin updates or other major interventions on the website outside peak hours.
  • If the problem persists, check the plugins – most often backup, import, or those that download data from external services.

An error occurred while connecting to the database server

Problem: The error message An error occurred while connecting to the database server. is displayed.

Cause: You will most often encounter this error after changing the password for the database administrator account.

Solution: Make sure the database used by WordPress exists, and that the wp-config.php file on FTP contains the current connection information for this database, including the username and current password.

If the connection information is correct, check the WEDOS Status ⧉ service to see whether an outage is in progress.

Media upload error – temporary directory does not exist

Problem: Media cannot be uploaded; the error message Temporary directory does not exist. appears.

Cause: The FTP root directory is missing the tmp folder for temporary files.

Solution: Log in to FTP using the main account and check that, in addition to the www folder, there are also tmp and session folders. If they do not exist, create new ones.

Undefined function

Problem: The website does not work; an error message beginning with Fatal error: Call to undefined function. is displayed.

Cause: The version of WordPress, the template, or the plugin is not compatible with the PHP version.

Solution: Check the requirements of the system, templates, and plugins and set a PHP version that they support.

Frequently asked questions

Is the WordPress installation charged separately?

WordPress itself is free, as is its automatic installation. We do not perform manual installation, not even as a paid service.

Can’t I have WordPress on LowCost hosting?

We do not operate an application installer on LowCost hosting. You can still install WordPress, but only manually.

How do I move a website from WordPress hosting to VEDOS?

If you have access to FTP, you can use automatic migration. If you can install plugins, use any migration plugin.

If I turn off CRON because of error 503, will anything break?

As long as you replace automatic triggering with a scheduled CRON task, no. Without it, scheduled posts, emails, updates, and other scheduled actions would stop being sent/executed.
