You can find a simplified version of this guide in the article Getting Started – Moving from a competitor.
This article addresses moving services from another service provider (domain registrar or hosting provider). If you want to move services from another user within VEDOS, follow the guide Services – Transfer from another VEDOS account.
In this article you will learn:
- How to move:
- Common problems
- Frequently asked questions
Moving a domain to VEDOS
A domain and hosting are two different services. If you want to run a website, emails, or both with VEDOS, you can keep the domain registered with another company.
Before moving a domain, make sure that the given extension is in our offer ⧉. If we do not offer your extension, you cannot transfer the domain to us, but you can still create DNS and websitehosting services for it.
If you want to have all services under one roof, transfer the domain to us according to the guide Domains – Transfer.
Moving a website to VEDOS
You can move almost any website to VEDOS, provided you have access to the source files (via FTP) and possibly to databases. This also applies to most websites created in content management systems (e.g. WordPress).
A standard website move takes place in these steps:
- Ordering web hosting or another service
- Migrating files and databases
- Pre-production check
- Pointing the domain (DNS)
Ordering hosting
For most websites, we recommend ordering the service Webhosting with NoLimit plan ⧉. The service has these basic features:
- Support for secure HTTPS access
- New versions of PHP and MariaDB database
- Unlimited space for website files
- Sufficient performance for most modern content management systems
- 5 GB of email storage expandable up to 0.5 TB.
If you need higher performance for a web application, consider Webhosting with Extra plan ⧉, or the WMS ⧉ service with dedicated performance.
If your application requires special technologies or access to the operating system in addition to performance, consider using VPS ⧉.
We do not provide support for moving websites to server services.

Migrating files and databases to Webhosting
You can move files and databases to a newly created web hosting service in the following ways:
- Automatic migration of files and data in basic mode, if your website either does not use a database or is created in the WordPress CMS. Follow the guide Webhosting – Automatic data migration.
- Automatic migration of files and data in expert mode, if your website uses databases, or if you want full control over the migration process. Follow the guide Webhosting – Expert automatic data migration.
- By a CMS plugin, such as the WordPress UpDraftPlus ⧉, or Duplicator ⧉. Follow the instructions for the specific plugin.
- Manually according to the guide below.
If automatic migration does not work properly, download the files and export the databases from the original web hosting service and upload them to the new web hosting. The following guides will help you:
- Webhosting – File management
- Webhosting – Databases
- Webhosting – Database import and export in phpMyAdmin
After migrating databases, update their details in the website configuration files.
Pre-production check
During automatic migration, we provide a free domain on which you can check whether the website works correctly.
If you do not have such a domain, you can check it:
- Via the internal address of the web hosting. It has a format like
http://123456.w78.wedos.ws/and can be found in the email about the setup of the web hosting, or in the service detail in the customer administration. It displays the contents of the www folder. It may not work correctly with some frameworks and content management systems (WordPress). - On the domain using the hosts file. In the operating system hosts file, you can assign the domain a different address than it would load from DNS. Edit this file according to your operating system instructions and assign the domain the IP address of the new web hosting, which you can find in the email about the setup of the web hosting, or in the service detail in the customer administration.

Pointing the domain (DNS)
If the website works as it should after the move, you can point the domain to it:
- Automatically: If you have a domain and DNS at VEDOS, you can point DNS to the new web hosting or mail hosting automatically according to the guide Domains – Pointing to services. The system will overwrite the current settings of A, AAAA and MX records.
- Manually: If you use WEDOS DNS, follow the guide DNS – Domain records. Set new A, AAAA and MX records for the domain.
If you do not have the domain or DNS at VEDOS, set the Webhosting DNS records at your provider.
Moving emails to VEDOS
You can move emails to a newly created hosting service in the following ways:
- By automatic migration of mailboxes. Follow the guide Emails – Automatic migration.
- Manually using an email client.
Automatically migrate emails to:
If you need to create new mailboxes manually, follow the guide Emails – Mailboxes.
Moving DNS to WEDOS
Although changing DNS records usually takes up to 1 hour and changing DNS servers 6 – 48 hours, we recommend doing it only after thoroughly checking the functionality of the website on the new hosting.
Moving DNS to WEDOS is not automatic, even if you transfer the domain to us. If you want to use our DNS, enter the DNS servers
ns.wedos.net ns.wedos.cz ns.wedos.eu ns.wedos.com
or, for CZ domain extensions, use the NSSET named WEDOS.
A detailed guide for setting DNS servers (NSSET) for domains registered with WEDOS can be found in the article Domains – DNS servers (NSSET).
If you have the domain, DNS and hosting services with us, you can point DNS records in a few clicks according to the guide Domains – Pointing DNS to services. If you want to set DNS records manually, follow the guide DNS – Domain records.
After pointing DNS to web hosting, you can activate the HTTPS certificate. A detailed guide can be found in the article Webhosting – Quick HTTPS setup.
Common problems
Common problems when moving services from another provider include:
- Unreachable FTP of the original hosting
- The message “Webhosting is active” is displayed instead of the migrated website
- The website does not work properly after migration
Unreachable FTP of the original hosting
Problem: The original hosting does not have accessible FTP, which we would use to obtain the website files.
Solution: If FTP is only blocked, ask the provider's support to restore access, or to provide a backup.
If the provider does not provide FTP access at all, the website will probably not be transferable.
Webhosting is active
Problem: Even after copying the files to FTP, the green page Webhosting is active is still displayed.
Cause: The page is cached in the browser, or there is a problem with the directory and file structure.
Solution: First, press Ctrl+Shift+R to verify that this content is not just cached in the browser.
If the problem persists, log in to FTP and check that the website meets one of these conditions:
- The website is uploaded in the www folder and the original index.html file is overwritten by your website's index.html file, or deleted (if you have index.php).
- The website is uploaded in the www/domains/domena.tld folder, where domena.tld is the domain name on which it should work, without www. The www folder contains the default .htaccess file.
The migrated website does not work properly
Problem: Errors appear on the migrated website, or it is broken.
Solution: Look up the problem and its solution in the article Webhosting – Non-functional website after migration.
Frequently asked questions
